Our Philosophy
RGS Cricket has been played on our main ground, Flagge Meadow, for over 130 years and has seen the development of numerous first-class cricketers including notably: Imran Khan (Worcestershire, Sussex and Pakistan), Tim Curtis (Worcestershire and England), Dean Headley (Kent, Middlesex and England) and most recently, Ed Pollock (Warwickshire, Birmingham Bears and drafted next season to play for Manchester Originals in the new Hundred competition).
Our philosophy towards Cricket encompasses the following key five ingredients: technique development, working productively in a team environment, positive gameplay, playing the game in the right spirit, and the importance of productive practice. These values support our Charter for Sport, and it is certainly our belief that Cricket is a sport to be enjoyed and played with a passion that will endure well after pupils conclude their school years.

County Cups and Overseas Tours
In the summer, we run fourteen teams, including Girls’ Cricket teams and have a challenging fixture list against many of the strongest schools Nationally. The younger teams take part in County Cups, and the 1st XI plays over twenty fixtures, culminating in the annual RGS Festival between six Royal Grammar Schools in England. The senior side has also embarked on a number of overseas tours to the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka and recently India, where the pupils were able to experience challenging cricket fixtures in extreme heat and humidity whilst immersing themselves in a unique cultural environment.
Winter Training
Pupils have the opportunity to benefit from winter coaching in the Michaelmas and Lent terms in the Tom Savage Sports Hall, where there are five indoor cricket lane nets. Those on our Athlete Development Programme also get the opportunity for one-to-one lessons in order to work on all aspects of their game. These are run under the supervision of the Head of Cricket, Phil Newport (Worcestershire and England) and Cricket professional, Thomas Fell (Worcestershire). We have a very strong link with many local club sides as well as Worcestershire County Cricket Club in order to ensure that all players have a clear pathway for development.
