Super Netball Success
On Saturday 11 February the RGS Worcester Family of Schools united to support the 1st and 2nd VII Netball teams at The University of Worcester Arena as they played in the 7th annual ‘Superball’ match against King’s School. This year’s match was an epic display of the pupils’ talent, camaraderie, resilience, sportsmanship and hard work.
The annual ‘Superball’ Netball fixture saw RGS Worcester win 41-36 against King’s School in a tense and closely contested match in front of a sell-out crowd. The 1st VII and 2nd VII Netball teams both celebrated wins and earned the University of Worcester ‘Superball’ trophy, making it five wins out of seven for RGS Worcester since ‘Superball’ was introduced in 2014.
The evening got off to an exciting start with the 2nd VII squad competing in a thrilling game which saw RGS take an early lead and win the match 31-21 with a confident performance throughout.
Between the two matches, pupils from the Prep Schools of both King’s School and RGS Worcester joined together to enjoy a Netball coaching class, before pupils from both Senior Schools entertained supporters with choreographed cheerleading routines during the build-up to the eagerly anticipated 1st VII team ‘Superball’ match, and in the breaks between each quarter of the match.
As the 1st VII team took to the arena, the cheer of support and encouragement was incredible from both the RGS and King’s supporters. The match proved to be closely contested with both teams showing resilience and determination throughout. At half time the score was 27-26 to RGS Worcester.
In the final quarter, with only five minutes of play left on the clock, the score was 35-35 with all to play for. It was at this point the RGS team showed their athleticism and tenacity to calmly score goal after goal as their supporters cheered them on. The atmosphere in the Arena was electric as the final seconds of the match counted down and RGS stretched their lead to 41-36. As the final whistle went, over 650 RGS supporters were on their feet to celebrate the win and congratulate the ‘Superball’ team.
RGS Head of Netball, Miss Ellie Gibbons said: “It has been so exciting to see all the hard work that has been put in by the girls in the lead up to ‘Superball’, and I am thrilled to witness this hard work pay off for them, with the opportunity to show everybody just how brilliant they are. Thank you to parents and staff members who have supported the RGS Netball teams this season”.
The fixture was again streamed live on YouTube so if you were unable to attend, or want to relive the thrilling action, please click here to watch.
We would like to thank the University of Worcester for allowing our teams once again to play at their Arena. Thank you also to everyone involved in organising the fixture from both schools and to everyone who attended and supported the team.
Congratulations to the 1st and 2nd VII, we are incredibly proud of you all!
