Spreading Joy and Wellness at RGS Through Pet Therapy
We are delighted to announce the arrival of Jasmine, our therapy dog, who has been making a positive impact on the wellbeing of our pupils at RGS. Every Tuesday, from 1.15pm to 2.00pm Jasmine provides much-needed relaxation sessions that have become a highlight of the week for many pupils.
Since the beginning of the Trinity term, the relaxation sessions with Jasmine have been running consistently. Pupils who have had the opportunity to spend time with her have expressed that they feel good for the rest of the day after their interaction. It is truly a calming experience, allowing our pupils to find a sense of peace, comfort, contentment and relaxation.
The introduction of Jasmine and the creation of the wellbeing dog programme were driven by the School Council, with pupils’ voices leading the decision-making process. Recognising the benefits of pet therapy for mental health, the School Council took action to incorporate a wellbeing dog into our Pastoral Care system. Assistant Head and Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mrs Sofia Nicholls, ensures that all pupils are aware of Jasmine’s presence on site, taking into consideration any sensitivities related to dogs.
The wellbeing dog programme at RGS is organised in collaboration with ‘Pets As Therapy’ (PAT), a non-profit organisation. This national charity is dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of people across the UK. Their volunteers and temperament-assessed pets visit various establishments, including care homes, hospitals, hospices, schools, and prisons, spreading joy and bringing smiles to many faces.
Jasmine’s volunteer handler, who had two sons attend RGS, is delighted to witness the positive developments in Pastoral Care at our School. The presence of Jasmine not only brings comfort to our pupils but also serves as a testament to the importance of creating a nurturing and supportive environment for everyone.
We are incredibly grateful to Jasmine and her volunteer from ‘Pets As Therapy’. If you would like to pay Jasmine a visit please contact Mrs Nicholls.
