The Literary Society (LitSoc) has had a hugely successful start to the Academic year, with rapidly increasing numbers, The Lecture Theatre is now LitSoc’s new home every Monday evening. Year Eleven also has its very own LitSoc ‘bubble’ every Friday lunchtime. Pupils enjoy the trademark Litsoc experience: literature and tea!
In 2019, RGS Worcester invested in new digital signage software called Trilby TV. The idea was to bring our digital screens around the School to life and also encourage more academic departments and staff to share content. We are pleased to confirm that the deployment has been a huge success. All four of the RGS Family of Schools are now using Trilby TV as a matter of course to share pictures, updates, Twitter feeds and most importantly pupils’ work.
On Friday 9 October, the ‘EdTech Vision 2025’ report was published by the EdTech Advisory Forum in response to the Educational Select Committee’s request for views and evidence on ‘The Impact of COVID-19 on education and Children’s Service’. The report celebrated the tenacity and resourcefulness of teachers, support staff, schools and colleges from across the UK as they dealt with the challenges thrust upon them due to COVID-19.
Last Saturday, RGS Worcester welcomed Cheltenham Ladies College to play the first Hockey fixtures of the term. Having returned initially to summer sports and then gradually integrating Hockey back into the co-curricular programme, the senior girls attended Indoor Hockey training sessions to get them back into the swing of things. Remaining within their Year groups, we had almost thirty Sixth Form girls to select from and, as it was only a friendly fixture, we listed twenty-one to play the eleven-a-side game.
On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, a number of pupils from first the Sixth Form, and then Year Eleven, visited the Sabrina Bridge site to see the work that is being carried out there. We were lucky enough to be able to speak to the structural engineers from Jacobs and Griffiths who have been involved in the project since the beginning.
RGS Worcester’s pupils and staff have beaten the 2018/2019 fundraising record across the senior school, by raising over £17,000 for charitable causes during the 2019/20 academic year. This impressive total exceeds by almost £4,000 the previous year’s total. This is all the more commendable given the School was in ‘lockdown’ during the Trinity term.
The banner outside RGS Worcester says the School is ‘Open for Admissions – Come and Join the Family’ and has done for many months. We have been extremely busy in Admissions to ensure that prospective pupils and their parents have the opportunity to visit in these unprecedented times and there is more interest than ever before.
Adrian Fok, Lower Sixth, found out this week that he has been awarded an Arkwright Scholarship. The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme is the most prestigious scholarship scheme of its type in the UK. Each year a handful of these scholarships are awarded to aspiring leaders wanting to pursue Engineering.
Mrs Vincent and Mrs Bond (aka DJ Vincent and DJ Bond) are the proud new voices of ‘Radio Lockdown’, the newest radio show taking the School by storm. In a bid to engage and entertain pupils during the rainy break times, Mrs Bond and Mrs Vincent share their ‘Lanter’ (literary banter) with listeners in Year Seven, Eight and Nine.
The aims of the PSHCE programme at RGS Worcester is to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, teamworking and critical thinking in the context of three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships, and living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education).
