We have achieved a ‘first’ – an entire term’s House Competition delivered virtually! First of all, we need to thank all of the staff who have run events over this past year, and especially in ‘lockdown’. It’s been wonderful to see that the House System can still thrive whatever the circumstances!
In light of the nation shutting down, a lot of life-enhancing activities have been brought to a halt and experiences that bring us happiness, in the very moment we need them most, cancelled. This is nowhere more evident than in the Music Department where pupils from all four schools had put in hours of preparation for the ‘Out of Africa’ Choral Concert performance due to be held in Worcester Cathedral in March.
Rowing fixtures have been reinvented for the Trinity term. In place of our traditional river races the rowers, and teams of parents, have competed at several ‘virtual’ regattas against schools and clubs from around the country and overseas.
As the demand for PPE has now reduced, we have been able to add up the contribution made from RGSW and can confirm that we have provided 2,500 Face Visors, 120 Specialist Scrubs and 50 Scrubs Bags and 338 Goggles to the NHS and local medical providers.
The extremely generous sum donated since April by the alumni community in support of pupils and their parents has recently been supplemented by those parents who have chosen to donate their Trinity term fee rebates to the Hardship Fund. A number of parents of the Upper Sixth Class of 2020 Leavers have also elected to donate their refundable deposit to the Foundation for the same purpose.
The Trinity term is normally an incredibly exciting time for many pupils, but particularly those who are looking forward to joining a new school or moving on to the next stage in their RGS journey. Here at RGS we know how important it is to ensure that all transitions to our Senior School are as enjoyable and exciting an experience as they can be, and we have worked tirelessly to ensure that it is just that for those pupils joining our Senior School.
Our Year Eleven students were asked to give us their feedback regarding the work they have been doing in the ‘bridging’ courses that RGS Worcester has been offering during the ‘lockdown’ period. Below is a selection of replies.
This week, RGS Worcester has joined the Youth Sport Trust and Sky Sports to help young people up and down the country engage in a week of virtual sporting challenges. With young people set to miss out on their main school sport day this summer, the Youth Sport Trust is taking its annual National School Sport Week campaign beyond the school gates and reinvented as National School Sport Week at Home.
Young Fashion Designer UK is a highlight in the Textiles calendar and is usually hosted at RGS Worcester each year. Even though we have not been able to run the competition in its usual format, we have launched our first online competition for students across the country to enter.
The Upper Sixth have done remarkably well by embracing the opportunities this programme has afforded them as a result of the cancellation of their exams and the continuation of teaching that RGS has been able to provide.
