Prep School

Years Three to Six

Preparatory School (or Prep School for short) is our name for Year Three to Year Six at RGS The Grange. In the lower years of Prep, your child’s core subjects are primarily delivered by class teachers as they transition from a topic approach to more discrete specialist lessons. Your child will be taught Sports, Music, French, C&IT, PE and Games by specialist teachers who really inspire and foster a passion in these areas.

Innovative teaching and learning

Your child will be taught in a mixed-ability group for English and Science and grouped for Mathematics according to ability and progress. This allows us to stretch and challenge your child and provide additional time to embed the basics.

From Year Four, your child will have their own iPad to allow full involvement in our Digital Learning Programme, which develops literacy and numeracy skills alongside traditional educational practices.

It is vital that your child has time in the school day for immersion and focus on different areas of the curriculum. For this reason, we have remodelled our timetable to provide a variety of exciting afternoons.

Discovery afternoons when your child learns Science, including hands-on, practical activities
Creative afternoons where your child’s imagination can soar using a range of materials in DT, Art and Digital Media.
Humanity afternoons covering History and Geography, often supported by one of our termly school trips to bring learning to life
Enrichment afternoons which allow your child to cover Philosophy, Reasoning, Team Building, Positivity, Debating and Thinking Skills alongside Drama, Cookery, Forest School and Textiles.

One: Innovative Teaching and Learning

RGS is leading the way in Worcestershire with our bespoke Digital Learning Programme. iPads and digital technology are embedded in our blended curriculum, which combines the best traditional teaching methods with cutting-edge technology.

Five: Excellence in Sport and Music

Our sporting reputation both locally, regionally and nationally, has grown significantly over the past 10 years. Our pupils have specialist teaching in PE and Games with opportunities to try a wide range of sports. We have had National success in Football, Hockey and Cross Country and enjoyed County and Regional success in Rugby, Cricket and Netball.

Music plays an integral part of a child’s education at RGS The Grange, and children are able to be part of various choirs and ensembles as well as have individual peripatetic music lessons in school. The Senior Choir won the Worcester Competitive Arts Festival in 2018 and has recently competed in the finals of the Barnardo’s Nation Choral Competition at the Royal Festival Hall, London.

Seven: Specialist Teachers and Facilities

We have specialist teaching rooms for Music, Computing and IT, Art, Design Technology, Science and French. Alongside that, we have two large halls, and a full-sized Astro Turf, a traversing wall, an observatory and many sports fields and playgrounds.

Specialist teachers instil a passion for their subject and provide rich teaching opportunities.

Eight: Responsibilities

Throughout Year Five and Six, pupils are encouraged to take on roles of responsibility, these ranging from Class prefects and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors to Digital Leaders. Our older pupils sit on the School Council and are voted termly into House Captain and Form Captain positions. Children throve with responsibility, and even the less confident pupils shine.
