‘Big Push’, a Big Success
Year Ten pupil, Libby Parker, impressively completed a marathon distance trail in her wheel chair, with the support of friends, family and celebrities on Sunday.
The group successfully completed the ‘Big Push’ around the city of Worcester to raise awareness and funds to support children with long Covid, reaching the donation target of £5,000. Libby tested positive with Covid-19 in summer 2021 and over a year on, she is using a wheelchair as she cannot walk for more than 20 minutes at a time.
Becky Redfern, a double Paralympian, joined Libby and her team for part of the 26.2 miles, with Libby, her mother and close friend completing the entire distance, in an impressive 11 hours.
The ‘Big Push’ finished at RGS Worcester with a hero’s reception, breaking the ceremonial ribbon just after 6.30pm. John Pitt, Headmaster of RGS Worcester said, “What a superb achievement by Libby, her family and friends. It was wonderful to see local people stop and donate, recognising the commitment to completing the marathon distance. We even had Peppa Pig and George Pig join the walking group for the final leg from RGS The Grange to RGS Worcester! Well done to Libby and her family for increasing the profile of long Covid amongst children and for raising such an impressive amount.”
At the finish line, Libby’s mother Helen Parker thanked everyone for their support and donations, adding, “Today was really amazing! Twenty-three people walking through the centre of Worcester, with people joining us in and out of the day. Although we’ve now hit target, please do continue to donate.”
Close friend, Lucia Weaver completed the whole walk alongside Libby and said, “It was really tough at times, I wasn’t sure I would be able to complete it at points. It’s really amazing to be raising money for something so close to our heart. It’s been hard watching my friend go through this over the last year, but to see her out there today, with so much support, it’s been really special to see.”
