Music in our Veins

Wander through the School, and you’ll soon hear why we say that music runs through the veins of RGS Dodderhill.

We embed music in our ethos because it is one of the greatest gifts you can give a child. As well as bringing developmental and social benefits, a love of music will sustain your child through good times and bad in later life. There’s a reason so many choirs and orchestras continued online during ‘lockdown’ (and why there was such joy at being able to make music with others when restrictions were lifted).

a love of music will sustain your child through good times and bad in later life.

Our Music Ethos

Your child will be taught music by subject specialists from Nursery through to Year 11. If they wish to learn an instrument, we cater for most instruments: woodwind; strings and brass; piano; guitar and bass guitar; voice; drum kit; and ukelele. Many children sit music exams, and we pride ourselves on a small percentage of girls achieving the illustrious Grade 8 before leaving at age 16.

Our musical tradition is inclusive. Take singing, for example, your child can join Pre-Prep, Prep, Senior and Chamber Choirs that regularly perform in and out of school: at festivals, competitions, charity events, religious services, concerts, promotional events and foreign tours. Each Choir sings music from all cultures, including British folk, church and pop music, African song, Gospel and Eastern Mediterranean traditional song, and classical music.

“music is busy and ambitious, with 65 per cent of pupils learning an instrument”. – good schools guide
