RGS Basketball Club leaps to action
I was thrilled to hear from Director of Sport, Mr Roots, that a number of pupils had asked for a Basketball Club, and if I would be willing to start a lunchtime club and potentially a Basketball team if numbers allowed. As a keen Basketball player since the age of ten, I willingly accepted the challenge!
In week one, we had eight pupils attend, but by week two, word had obviously spread as 22 pupils appeared – raring to engage and learn more about the sport! Pupils from all Year groups, both boys and girls were in attendance, with particular interest from pupils in Year Ten and above.
Basketball can be a fast and furious sport, but it contains hundreds of different skills. It is a game unlike any other invasion game and requires hours and hours of practice. At present, the level of talent is very raw as most pupils are relative beginners and so we are focusing on learning fundamental skills such as shooting and layups.
Basketball is a huge passion of mine and was my main sport as a pupil, all the way through to University. I represented my County and Region and played in the National Basketball League after University.
I aim to enthuse pupils in Basketball in the hope that we could have enough players to create a School team and play local fixtures in the future – who knows then where we might go!
