RGS Community welcomes new pupils from Ukraine
Pupils have joined RGS Worcester and RGS Dodderhill across different Year groups, with the new pupils having links to the RGS community, and staying with host families locally. RGS is offering educational provision for the pupils as well as support with uniform and equipment, with the help of the Parents’ Association.
To support pupils in their transition into school and also life in the UK, we have been grateful for assistance from the RGS community with language and translation skills. We are also privileged to welcome Ukrainian University student Polina to RGS, to assist and support pupils in their studies and integration into school life.
Polina was studying Computer Science and in her First Year at university in Ukraine, before leaving her home to join a host family in Worcestershire earlier this month. Polina is working with all the new pupils across the RGS Worcester Family of Schools, assisting with language translation, but also helping to interpret some of the different learning approaches found here in the UK which differ to those in Ukraine. One such difference is the use of calculators in Mathematics which is forbidden in a Ukrainian classroom!
Polina said: “The RGS team have all been so kind and welcoming. The teachers are amazing and very supportive towards me and the pupils and the lessons are so interesting – I am really grateful that I can go to school again!”
With an interest in computing and technology, Polina has been impressed with how the School uses technology “in the very best way” and has seen the benefits that assist both teachers and pupils to communicate. Polina said: “Teachers have been great, many using technology to give tasks in Ukrainian to pupils who are currently struggling with English.”
The RGS Worcester Family of Schools Ukrainian Community Event
Support for The RGS Worcester Family of Schools Ukrainian Community Event is growing, with more visitors welcomed to today’s event. As one attendee said: “These meetings are very important, useful and emotionally positive. They help us, the Ukrainians, to unite, help and support each other. Thank you for this opportunity to join a new meeting.”
